Laser Maintenance Guidelines and Schedule

1. Before Each Use

  • Inspect the laser cleaning gun and protective lens for contamination, cracks, or damage.
  • Check the focusing lens/protective window and clean or replace it if necessary.
  • Inspect the laser head cable, fiber-optic cable, and electrical connections for damage.
  • Make sure the cooling system is operating properly.
  • Check the chiller coolant level and verify that there are no leaks.
  • Inspect ventilation and air filters.
  • Make sure the work area is clean and free of combustible materials.
  • Verify that all laser safety equipment and interlocks are functioning properly.

2. Protective Lens Maintenance

The protective lens is one of the most important consumable components of a laser cleaning machine.

  • Inspect the lens regularly during operation.
  • If you notice reduced cleaning performance, irregular beam output, discoloration, or a visible spot on the lens, stop the machine and inspect it.
  • Use proper optical-lens cleaning materials and procedures.
  • Never touch the optical surface with bare fingers.
  • If the lens is burned, cracked, heavily contaminated, or damaged, replace it rather than attempting to continue operating the machine.

3. Cooling System

 For water-cooled laser cleaning machines:

  • Check coolant level before operation.
  • Check coolant temperature during operation.
  • Inspect hoses and connections for leaks.
  • Keep the chiller's condenser/radiator clean and unobstructed.
  • Clean the chiller filter according to the manufacturer's recommended interval.
  • Use the coolant specified for the particular laser/chiller system.
  • Replace coolant at the manufacturer's recommended interval.

4. Air-Cooling and Ventilation

For air-cooled components:

  • Keep ventilation openings unobstructed.
  • Clean dust from fans and ventilation openings periodically.
  • Do not operate the machine in an environment with excessive dust, oil mist, or corrosive fumes without appropriate filtration.

5. Laser Cleaning Head

  • Keep the scanner/head exterior clean.
  • Do not allow dust or metal particles to accumulate around the optical components.
  • Inspect the protective lens and focusing optics regularly.
  • Check the nozzle for damage or contamination.
  • Verify that the scanner moves normally and does not produce unusual noise or vibration.
  • Do not disassemble the laser head unless qualified to do so.

6. Electrical Inspection

Periodically inspect:

  • Power cables and plugs
  • Grounding connections
  • Emergency-stop circuit
  • Main power switch
  • Control cables
  • Laser-source connections
  • Chiller connections
  • Internal wiring and terminals

7. Air/Gas System

If the machine uses compressed air or nitrogen:

  • Check gas pressure.
  • Inspect hoses and fittings for leaks.
  • Drain moisture from the air system when applicable.
  • Replace or service filters as necessary.
  • Make sure the gas supply is clean and dry.

8. Cleaning the Machine

  • Turn the machine off and disconnect power before performing maintenance.
  • Remove dust and debris from the machine enclosure.
  • Keep cooling vents and fans clean.
  • Do not use compressed air directly on sensitive optical or electronic components unless the manufacturer's procedure specifically permits it.
  • Keep the control cabinet clean and dry.

9. Recommended Maintenance Schedule

Interval

Clean exterior, inspect laser head, check coolant/air system

Weekly

Inspect ventilation, filters, hoses, connectors, and scanner head

Monthly

Clean cooling-system components and inspect electrical connections

Every 3–6 months

Thorough inspection of cooling, electrical, optical, and mechanical systems

Annually

Complete preventive maintenance and safety inspection by qualified personnel

Important: Maintenance intervals should ultimately follow the specifications of the particular laser source, chiller, scanner/head, and machine manufacturer. Laser optics and internal laser-source components should not be serviced by unqualified personnel.
